Personal Journey
I highly recommend picking up the book Clear Thinking by Shane Parrish. I would also encourage you to check out his podcast, The Knowledge Project.
As my company has grown, I have learned that problem solving is one of the top skills to cultivate, maybe even the most important. Everyday we are tasked with a variety of issues that pop up. Some of them are obvious and have clear answers, but most do not.
Most problems are complex, like snowflakes. From my extensive research on google (and by that I mean maybe two clicks), I learned that “scientists” say that the chance of two snowflakes being exactly alike are about 1 in 1 million trillion. Apparently, there are, according to “meteorologists,” 1 trillion, trillion, trillion types of snowflakes. I don’t know if this is exactly meteorologically true, but I’m making a really great point so play along. The analogy is obvious.
Even though problems have similar attributes, every problem is just a little different. As a result, there is not a one size fits all approach to problem solving. Since this is true, we need to focus on how to think correctly about problems. By thinking correctly (clearly), we will be able to solve specific problems.
